This week has been a good one! I've got to go walking with some friends (thank you Mark and Kitty for the support!) as well as using the gym to get me used to the elevations of the Lake District!
But, this week also marks a significant moment: 80 years ago, at 25 and on his birthday, my grandfather was one of the British troops through the gates of Bergen-Belsen. Whilst he mentioned it briefly, in asking us to turn off “Schindler’s List”, we only learned the full extent of his involvement and what he went through after he passed. But, his bravery and trauma have stayed with me, and my family, ever since. He was the kindest and humblest of men, and I often think about the courage it must have taken — something I’ll be carrying with me on every step of this walk.
In his memory, and in recognition of so many who have served and are now fighting their own battles, I’m raising money for Walking With The Wounded, a charity that supports those who have been wounded in action and are adjusting to life after service.
As the first generation of my family not to have served, I’m taking on this challenge with gratitude, perspective — and a decent supply of plasters. If those who have fought for us can face what they did for us, the least I can do is take on the pain barrier and a few blisters in return.
